AUPSA Online: Welcome
- Sandra A. Oder
From the Newsletter Editor
It is an honour to present the first edition of AUPSA’s magazine, whose ultimate goal is to be a successful tool for communication and change for the Ugandan community worldwide. This edition focuses on the positive role women play in our society. In South Africa, August is Women’s Month, which is used as a platform to focus the attention of the country on issues of women’s empowerment and gender equality. This year, the aim is also to encourage all people to heed the call of the theme for 2012, which is ‘56 Years of Women United against Poverty, Unemployment and Inequality’. This is a call to action and requires that we galvanise our efforts to be part of meaningful change in our families, communities and professions.

Where are the Ugandans
South Africa is a land of opportunities for many African nationals who have become real movers and shakers, business role models, sharp legal eagles and other industry titans. But what and where is the niche for Ugandans? asks Hannington Kasirye Lwanga.
In the wake of persistent and chronic unemployment that is sweeping through countries like a bushveld fire, I wonder how small immigrant communities here in South Africa are fairing.

Women and entrepreneurship
When can one start a business? Stella M. Ogema asks a critical question that many struggle with. She shares her experience that is particularly relevant for female entrepreneurs who want to make it in the tough business environment.
When is it the right time to start a business? I posed this question to a friend. “There really isn't a right time to start a business. You wake up one morning and realise the time is now! It's not when the planets are in alignment. This driving need for - lack of a better word-growth and the desire to succeed and have financial independence, wakes you up one morning and you know for a fact that by the end of the day, for better or worse, you will not be the same person you were that morning”. She echoed. Just like that? I wondered, it sounded too simple. But maybe it is just that simple.
